KathySledge_BMIRnBHH_2015.jpgBMI R&B/Hip-Hop Awards honor Nile Rogers with Icon Award, Kathy Sledge, CeeLo Green, Debra Cox and Kelly Price perform his hits

Legendary hit maker Nile Rogers was recently honored at the 2015 BMI R&B/Hip-Hop Awards with the BMI Icon Award. It was held at The Saban Theatre in Beverly Hills and some of his hits were performed by Debra Cox, Kelly Price, CeeLo Green, and Kathy Sledge (Sister Sledge) who performed one of the biggest hits "We are Family." Rapper B.o.B. opened the BMI member exclusive red carpeted show with a performance of his hits, and Ray J and BMI VP Catherine Brewton were host.

"I think when it comes to that song its iconic and we know he wrote so many but that one surpass music," Grammy nominated Kathy Sledge said about her groups' infamously popular song "We are Family." "It's more...its like ‘Happy Birthday' it's the message. I have two year olds coming up to me singing it."

Each year BMI awards their R&B and Hip-Hop members that topped the charts - songwriters, composers, music publisher and businesses. Calvin "Snoop Dogg" Broadus and DJ Mustard were two of many 2015 BMI R&B/Hip-Hop Award winners that were present at the event.

"I feel very fortunate," said Evan Ross (The Hunger Games: Mockingjay 1 & 2) during the red carpet arrivals about his career as an actor and performer. "I feel like everything is coming together. I have such an incredible happiness right now."

Meeting the son of the living legend Diana Ross and seeing how he possesses such a sweet humble personality made my year in more ways than one, but getting Jacob Latimore to sing for me gave me assurance that there is still natural talent out there.

"You got me out here singing...I'm ready now," laughed Jacob after singing the lyrics "I was born by the river in a little tent..." I believe that's Sam Cook's hit.

Nile Rogers, the co-founder of CHIC ("Le Freak"), received the BMI Icon Award for his outstanding work in the industry on projects for Diana Ross, Sister Sledge, David Bowie, Madonna, Duran Duran, Mick Jagger and Michael Jackson. He has sold over 200 million albums and 50 million singles worldwide.

BMI is celebrating 75 years, its president and CEO Mike O'Neill was on hand to present the Icon Award to Rogers. It has more than 600,000 songwriters, composers and music publishers. BMI represents public performance rights for more than 8.5 million music works.
