The Pulse of Entertainment: Jazz Vocalist Kyla Jade Releases ‘Christmas with Kyla' EP

(December 6, 2024) - "I put out a couple of (Christmas) singles along the way," said Jazz vocalist Kyla Jade about the reason for her holiday EP "Christmas with Kyla" (LoveJade). "I do a big (Christmas) show every year too...but this is the first (project)."

The holiday "Christmas with Kyla" EP offers six selections that include a live recording of "Carol of the Bells," a live recording of "Favorite Things," and Jade's version of "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" - to name a few.

"I'm a church baby," Jade told me when I asked about her skills at improvisations when she sings, "That was the beginning. I got that from church, I sang how I felt. You tell it your way - off the cuff. Jazz has that freedom."

Kyla Jade sang all the way to an appearance on NBC's "The Voice" (14th season) as part of Team Blake and she landed in the final three in that season.

I asked what changed for her, if anything, since her appearance on "The Voice" and she laughed a little and said, "It made me more expensive. It was six years ago. It put me in a different category. At the time I was touring with Jennifer Hudson and Patti LaBelle. ‘The Voice' put me in front of a young Pop audience."

Before "The Voice" Kyla spent a career as a singer on Dr. Bobby Jones' show "BET's Bobby Jones Gospel."

"Actually, it's been 20 years," Jade told me when I mentioned that, on YouTube, it seems like she had been singing for over 10 years. "In the 80s there was a book program, and I read a lot. They had a cart of books and also classic records...like Ella Fitzgerald. That (Jazz) music changed my life."

I mention her awesome stage presence and she said, "It came from the Dr. Bobby Jones' show. I was there for 12 years on BET. The music director...he would say, ‘I don't like what you are wearing." He taught me. He told me to tell people who you are (by your stage presence). He would push me into situations. I learned stage presence from those experiences."

"I have always sung," Kyla Jade told me. "I've even produced shows. But to pursue on my own...I had to be pushed."

Kyla took that experience on Dr. Bobby Jones' show and ran with it performing for audiences at the Special Olympics; at the annual Capital Fourth Independence celebration on PBS; the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, and to sold-out shows in New York at the Apollo Theatre. She has produced background vocals for such shows as Grammy Awards, CMA Awards, BET Awards, Stellar Awards and BET's Celebration of Gospel.

Kyla Jade has worked as background singer for not only Jennifer Hudson and Patti LaBelle, but Wynonna Judd as well. She has sung at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles; the L. A. Philharmonic; the Grand Ole Opry with ZZ Top's Billy F. Gibbons, and the Stagecoach Festival with Carrie Underwood.

When I mentioned how awesome her band sounds in the music videos to the singles on "Christmas with Kyla" - that appear on YouTube - she said, "I've been working with this band for the past three years. The one with the beard is the music director. He is phenomenal. They are all my good friends."

If you are in Nashville, Tenn you can see Kyla Jade perform on December 22, 2024 at the City Winery. Also, on the "Christmas with Kyla" EP you will find her covers of "Please Come Home for Christmas," and "O Holy Night." www.KylaSings.com
