The Pulse of Entertainment: Band Leader Chillie Willie Groove is an Unconventional Percussionist

willie_dunbarhotel_1_5_20.jpg
(January 17, 2020) -  "I have a CD coming out...along with performances in Arizona with George Benson," said Percussionist Willie Portela, known on stage as Chillie Willie Groove, when I asked what was happening.

He invited me to a performance, which I attended for review, at the Historic Dunbar Hotel's Delicious Restaurant in Los Angeles to hear his Chillie Willie Groove Band. What I saw was a generous and very professional band leader and what I heard was an unconventional percussionist. He used so many instruments and surfaces I thought about myself - I have a habit of drumming on anything. He was also very entertaining as he cheered the audience on to join him in rhythm.

Willie is a very experienced percussionist who still shares his art with the community at his own expense to inspire other artists - all the qualities of an icon. He even has his own trade mark look that sets him apart. Willie has the talent honestly, being the son of a Latin percussionist. He makes it clear though that he writes music too and not just Latin music, but R&B and Jazz too.

"I have 67 songs on ReverbNation - it's the #1 music site," Willie informed me.

That day at the Historic Dunbar the Chillie Willie Groove Band performed like they were performing on the Grammy Awards before millions of people. The members of the Chillie Willie Groove Band were seasoned professionals and icon musicians, such as icon Art Webb (Prince/Stanley Clark/Norman Connors) on flute; Malik Alkabir on sax; Benji Torres on upright bass; Onier Bacallo on trumpet, Joseph Gomez as an additional percussionist, and Gustavo Rodriguez on piano. Willie's band also has a singer, Elisa Gomez Taylor and Nick Mancini on vibes, but they weren't there that day.

"I'm going to my 2nd audition with ‘America Got Talent,'" he added excitedly.

Willie Groove performs all the time and everywhere and with his entertaining style he should make it to living legend status soon. He has a story that goes like this, his mother claims he was drumming in her womb and she was right. He grew up to perform as a percussionist with Spyro Gyra, Tower of Power, Poncho Sanchez, Bootsy Collins Angela Bofill and George Benson. He has played on many tours that have taken him all around the world like France. You can see some of his performance that day at https://youtu.be/cYj-4Cnk590. You can also follow Willie on Facebook @ChillieWillieGroove.

The Pulse of Entertainment: Platinum Songwriter M'Jestie's Rebirth Evokes ‘III', Debut Vocal Album

mjestie_crop.jpg
(January 21, 2020) - "When it's powerful enough to bring me to my knees...the change came. A Spiritual shift," said multi-platinum selling songwriter Alisha Brooks, known in the industry as M'Jestie, about rededicating her life to the belief in Christ. M'Jestie recently released a solo vocal debut album titled "III" and at this time she has released three singles from that project "Take Me to the Moon," "All Away," and "True." "I got to the top without God. I was rich and not happy. Then I had the ‘come to Jesus' moment."

M'Jestie took the advice of a friend and relocated from New Jersey to Virginia to take songwriting seriously. Through circumstance she wrote a song for the iconic Rihanna, "Pon de Replay." Not only was she able to write a song for the singer, but the song became one of Rhianna's single releases, and the single reached multi-platinum status. The "Pon de Replay" single peaked at #1 on U.S. Billboard Dance Club Songs Chart and #2 on U.S. Hot Billboard Chart.

M'Jestie said the name of her album "III" started out with one meaning and ended up with another meaning - the Trinity. The Trinity stands for The Father, The Son and The Holy Spirit - God. A New Jersey native with Blues, Jazz and Hip-Hop influences M'Jestie has also written songs for or worked with Victoria Beckham, Dame Dash and P. Diddy. As a vocalist M'Jestie worked with producer Calvin Merazh to find the sound of her voice. Singing is what she initially wanted to do, but the standard "business" of the industry turned her off. Her rebirth has given her the strength to endure as she releases her solo debut album, "III."

NBC_YoungRock_KenonShow_NewAmsterdam_ThatsMyJam.jpg
(January 24, 2020) - I attended the NBCUniversal Television Critics Association (TCA) Press Conference announcing surprises on returning programs this season and new programming to premiere next season. In a large hall in The Langham Huntington Hotel in Pasadena, California journalists gathered and were shown clips of some of the programming for review. We also had a chance to question cast members and executive producers of programming that have recently premiered on NBC.

"We have the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo," added Paul Telegdy, NBC Entertainment's Chairman. In 2024 ‘The New World' (a nature series)...we believe NBC programs...bring about change."

Returning shows include "The Kelly Clarkson Show," Ellen's "Greatest Night of Giveaways" and "Game of Games" game shows; "The Voice" with Nick Jonas replacing Adam Levine; Steve Harvey returns to host Ellen's "Little Big Shots" showcasing remarkable young people, and Jennifer Lopez' "World of Dance" returns with Neyo.

"You're going to find young Rock creating havoc in Hawaii...we are evicted off the island. Move to Nashville where I'm still creating havoc. Wrestling...at $40 a match helped shape me."

Everybody's favorite bubbly television personality Fran Dresher returns to the television screen with the new scripted comedy series "Indebted." "Indebted" is based on the life of the parents of Co-Executive Producer Dan Levy. The series follows him at the age where his kids are finally out of the house and suddenly his elderly parents surprise him by moving in.

"It's loosely based on their situation. The chemistry and electric relationships...it's nice to watch. My parents are funny. I asked what their retirement plan was...and my mom said we're coming to California to live with you."

"I'm glad my fans fell in love with my voice," said Fan about being asked to return to television to play Dan's Jewish mother.

The Pulse of Entertainment: The Mighty Men of Faith to Release Inspiring Live Album February 21, 2020
By
Eunice Moseley

MightyMenofFaith3.jpg

(January 28, 2020)- "We didn't know they were recording," said Wendell Basey, co-founded of the vocal Contemporary Gospel group The Mighty Men of Faith about their performance at the Valley Christian School in San Jose, California. "They ‘googled' looking for a Gospel group in the Bay area and our name came up. The Chaplain of the school listened to us and said these guys are good."

The Mighty Men of Faith sang for an hour straight for the Valley Christian middle school students and with a break sang another hour for the high school students. They selected seven songs they felt young people would enjoy and I think they did an excellent job. The songs they selected combined the Word of God with Contemporary sounds and phrases like "pump, pump, pump, pump it up" and delivers it in a Contemporary Jazz form. They mastered the recording by the school of the performances and will release it as "The Mighty Men of Faith Live at Valley Christian" (Baysco) on February 21, 2020.

"They even gave us 5-6 minutes for a sermon to students about friendship," Basey informed me.

The Mighty Men of Faith member Rev. Ed Harris gave the sermon on friendship.

"Well, I talked about what the Bible said...that God would open doors," Rev. Harris said. "That's what all of us want, to be in a place of friendship. I talked about Abraham being a friend of God, He trusted God...he leaned on Him...no matter what. God looks at the heart."

Aside from Wendell and Edward, members of The Mighty Men of Faith include actor/singer Charles Johnson and Rev. Richard Hayes - son of Rev. Ed. Harris. Johnson replaced co-founding member Malvin Scott who pasted-away and Rev. Hayes replaced co-founding member William Carswell who left for a solo project.

The Mighty Men of Faith has a grass-roots sound, almost raw in nature, with harmony as the thing that sticks out for me - that street corner harmony I was raised on. Of "The Mighty Men of Faith Live at Valley Christian" selections offered my favorites include #1 "Magnify His Holy Name" because of the harmony and its Praise & Worship feel; #2 "Believe in His Promises" because of the guitar work by Neil Castro and the electric keyboard sounds by Prince Damon and the vocals are almost like they are rapping bring that Hip-Hop feel to it, which is great for youth; #3 "Clean Up" because it's a great Praise & Worship song for kids, almost like a lullaby; #4 "Now I'm New" because it's a sweet and simple testimony of thanks; #5 "Power of We" because I love how they combine traditional with modern music making it great for kids and the harmony is tight too; #6 "A Friend of God" because its another wonderful Praise & Worship song, and #7 "This Joy" because it's a nice Contemporary Jazz number that has a twist of the Hip-Hop culture. I think I basically said the whole album is worthy of praise! Other musicians on the project aside from Castro on lead guitar and Damon on keyboard, are Cierra Davis on drums and Vernon Hall on bass.

The Pulse of Entertainment: Steve Oliver and Brian Simpson's ‘Unified' CD is Sexy and Inspiring

brian_simpson_steve_oliver_unified_cover_crop.jpg
(January 31, 2020) - "He'd do the melody...I'd do the chorus. It's like that on every song," said Guitarist Steve Oliver about the new album, "Unified," he just released on the Shanachie imprint with Jazz pianist Brian Simpson. They take turns and then reverse it - one plays the chorus and the other the melody - on each song making the delivery fresh and unusual. Like a mix of two of the same song. "We both love electronic dance music (EDM)...we added some of those techniques...with live instruments. It's a nice sound."

On "Unified" Steve and Brian get assistance from Alex Al on bass, Eric Valentine on drums and Ramon Yslas on percussion. Featured guests on the project include Rick Braun on trumpet, Larry Antonio on bass and Darrel Crooks on guitar. Both Oliver and Simpson produced the project with Shanachie Entertainment's Vice President of Jazz and A&R Danny Weiss as executive producer.

"We were thinking about a band project with me and Brian in charge. The band was actually called Unified," said Oliver about the name of the album. "Shanachie wanted our names to be prevalent...we understood."

Brian and Steve unified in an orderly manner on the "Unified" album, which I believe is a sexy and inspiring piece of work. Steve started his solo career in 1999. His 2004 album release featured producing extraordinaire Harvey Mason. His fifth album released was in 2010 and it premiered his vocal abilities on three singles. His eighth album release, in 2016, featured his vocals too but on every song. His heavenly vocals are on some of the songs on "Unified" as well.

Based in Los Angeles, the #1 hit making keyboardist Brian Simpson started his solo career in 2005 when he released his debut album. That year he earned a #1 Jazz hit and in 1991 he co-wrote a #1 Pop song for Surface. In 2010 his solo album release reached #1 on charts and his 2013 album release offered a single that also reached #1 on the Jazz charts. Simpson also serves as music director for Dave Koz - it has been 20 years.

"I been co-producer on his albums," Steve said about how he got into a collaboration which such a Jazz living legend. "We really do great work together. He said, ‘Let's do a collaboration?" I said, ‘Absolutely.' We really enjoy each other and work well together. I was so happy."

My favorite selections on the "Unified" album include the #1 title track "Unified" that has Steve and Brian taking turns on the chorus and melody giving it a Jazz/Soul feel. The #2 song "The Road Never Ends" you can almost hear someone singing though there are no vocals and I love the charms ringing in the background making it an uplifting and inspiring song. I also like #3 "What the Wind Knows" because it has a Latin vibe that makes the single almost sexy. On #4 "Fired Up" I was pleasantly surprised by the horns of Rick Braun and the percussions by Ramon are hot. The #7 "The Way Home" track is a favorite because it has a sweet, angelic and uplifting vibe. The #8 selection "Celestial Body" is a nice traditional Funky/Jazz single with piano playing that gave me visions of ballerinas dancing around then changing into tap dancers. The piano playing by Brian on #10 "A Distant Love" is almost like the keys are singing with the beautiful background vocals of Steve making it so sexy and oh so jazzy. My last favorite selection on the "Unified" album is #11 "And Then You Loved Me", because it is a very, very sweet song, with a Latin vibe - thanks to the guitar playing - and it has a jazzy feel because of the keys. As you can see, by my standards, there is a lot to love on the "Unified" album release of Steve Oliver and Brian Simpson.

The Pulse of Entertainment: Violinist Traliece B. Steps Out on Faith with the Release of Two Singles
By
Eunice Moseley

TralieceB_2.jpg

(February 4, 2020) - "I have been playing since I was eight...all my life. I tried other instruments. I come from a family of musicians," said Violinist Traliece Bradford, known on stage as Traliece B., about her skills. Traliece's last gig was playing for the Masquite Symphony Orchestra, which received a Grammy nomination for their 2009 album release while she was there. "It wasn't until...2011...God told me to step down. I was totally content and happy in the Orchestra. It wasn't too long until I rededicated my life to Christ."

Traliece created a record label, Wild Jehu Music, which was picked up by Devine Jamz Gospel Network. She later released two Christian singles, which she also sings on, titled "Forever Love" and "Nobody Knows." Her vocal ability is just a brilliant as her violin skills, projecting an exotic sound.

"My only thing is to release singles every couple of months," said Traliece when I asked her if she planned to release an album. "He (God) said to develop my own sound."

She said since rededicating her life to Christ she does what she feels He wants her to do, "I do have a third. Three more being mixed and mastered...I am going back into the studio to do three more. "

I told her it looks like God is putting together a full album for her to release. On February 15, 2020 Traliece will perform at the Frisco School of Music and I am sure she will be playing her new singles. Based in Dallas and a Business Manager at Bristol-Myers Squibb, Bradford started out playing violin for the New Orleans Youth Symphony Orchestra, then the Red Valley Symphony Orchestra in Virginia and last with the Masquite Symphony Orchestra. Her background and training was in Classical, Pop and Jazz. Her singles sound a bit Pop/Jazz giving them and her voice a fresh sound.

The Pulse of Entertainment: Special EFX 'All Stars' Album Featuring Chieli Minucci is a Masterpiece

By Eunice Moseley

Chieli_Minucci.jpg

(February 11, 2020) - "The thing about this record that's different is I get to play with people that travel with me on the road, I wrote it with them in mind," said Grammy nominated Chieli Minucci, a Contemporary Jazz guitarist, about his new album February 14, 2020, Valentine's Day, release titled "All Stars" (Trippin N Rhythm Records) by his band Special EFX Featuring Chieli Minucci.

The Special EFX band features the vocals of Maysa Leak on the Hendrix cover "Little Wings". The band consist of Lionel Cordew on drums; Jay Rowe on grand piano/keyboards; Jerry Brooks on bass; David Mann on sax and flute; Regina Carter on violin; Lao Tizer on grand piano/keyboard; Mino Cinelu on percussion; Tatum Greenblatt on trumpet; Gerald Veasley on bass; Eric Marienthal on sax; Fernando Saunders on fretless bass; Steve Adelson on the Chapman stick; Joel Rosenblatt on drums; Antoine Silverman on violin; Lin Roundtree on trumpet; Mike Davis on trombone, and Nelson Rangell on sax.

"I have a lot of horns, so I wrote for them," Chieli said. "I'm pretty grass-roots with the people I'm close with. "I kept some sounds of Special EFX. People know that comes from us. What is new is the big bass tunes. We stay true to what we were in the late 80s."

"All Stars" is the group's 21st project. They are currently on tour promoting the new "All Star" album which arrives February 13th at Yoshi's in Oakland, CA; the 15th at Spaghettini's in Seal Beach, CA (where I will be); the 18th at Blues Alley in Washington, DC; the 19th at Middle C Jazz in Charlotte, NC, and continuing the rest of February and March - ending April 11th at The Cutting Room in New York, NY.

In reviewing the "All Star" release by Special EFX Featuring Chieli Minucci my favorites cuts on the album include #1 "Mr. Marzipan" because it has just the right flow and I love the way Chieli plays the guitar and David plays the sax - they sing. I also like #3, the first single "Hanky Panky Boys" because the organ skills seem to be taking you to church and I love the "go go" feel thanks to the drums. The #4 selection "Little Wings," the Jimmy Hendrix cover, because the vocals of Maysa captures you, but the Hendrix influenced guitar playing and the sax pulls you all the way in. The #5 song "Empathy" is a masterpiece because of the perfect mixture of the guitar, the sax and the vocals of Fernando. The #7 track "Arise" is short, but its sweet, almost Classical sounding and I love the end with the violin sounding likes it's on its way to Heaven, and last #9 "Sweet Memories of You", which just has Chieli on guitar, is simply heavenly.

The Pulse of Entertainment: Grammy Nominated Keyboardist Gail Jhonson Releases ‘Joy, Joy' Single, Prelude to ‘Jazz in Pink' Album

gail_jhonson.jpg
(February 18, 2020) - "It's not complete. I just released the first single. I'm working on two more tracks now with Paul Jackson, Jr.," said Grammy nominated keyboardist Gail Jhonson about her solo project, "Jazz in Pink" (Shanachie Entertainment) due out this summer. Her label recently released the first single titled "Joy, Joy," featuring Kim Waters on sax.

Gail is the music director for famed Grammy winning guitarist Norman Brown. Her personal band is named Jazz in Pink, which is where the titled of the new album comes from.

"I have been working with Norman at least 20 years," Gail added. "I've written and produced my own thing since 2004."

Jhonson, a Philadelphia native, said that it was Norman Brown that hooked-her-up with his label Shanachie through Danny Weiss, the Vice President of Jazz and A&R.

"I'm debuting on Shanachie, but I started my career in 2004 with ‘Its About Time.' Then ‘Keep the Music Playing," and "Pearl' in 2009 - got the Grammy nomination," she told me.

Gail was a prodigy; she started performing professionally as a keyboardist at the age of 14. She earned a Bachelors Degree from Berklee College of Music and made herself a permanent presence in the Jazz circuit in Los Angeles. This allowed her to collaborate with legendary performers like Bobby Womack, Janet Jackson, Pink, Morris Day, Sheila E., Ray Parker Jr., Peabo Bryson and Patti Austin. She is fluent, as a musician, in Jazz (Smooth), R&B, Funk and Gospel.

"Jazz in Pink" will be her sixth solo project and her first project on the Shanachie imprint. The single debuted on the "Top 30 Billboard Contemporary Jazz Chart."

"I'm diffidently looking for a Grammy Award," she said, smilingly. "And the way things are going...their playing it all over the world. I said, ‘Well, look at that.' I like the record, didn't know everyone else would."

The Pulse of Entertainment: Academy Award Winning Harrison Ford Is All About Telling the Story in 20th Century Studios' The Call of the Wild

By Eunice Moseley

HarrisonFord_The-Call-of-the-Wild.jpg

(February 18, 2020) - "It's about the story. The telling of the story," said Academy Award winning Harrison Ford (Star Wars) about taking the role of John Thornton in the 20th Century Studio's presentation of The Call of the Wild - arriving in theatres February 21, 2020.

The Call of the Wild story began in 1903 when Jack London published the novel "The Call of the Wild" about the journey of a big-hearted dog named Buck, uprooted from his home in Los Angeles to be sold to work as a sled-dog in the Yukon during the Klondike Gold Rush. Bucks journey takes him through the meeting of different types of people - some loving and some not - before he finds the courage and heart to take control of his own life. This adaptation is a 20th Century Fox film under the new brand of 20th Century Studios, renamed to recognize the acquisition of 20th Century Fox by Disney.

Oscar nominated Harrison Ford (Indiana Jones) plays John Thornton, a mourning father who decides to go on an adventure with a dog named Buck. Harrison Ford's acting has help brand mass appeal to both the Stars Wars and Indiana Jones franchises. Now, sharing the starring role with an animated dog, Ford says this role suits him just find.

"I read the book in high school. It was a required reading. I was pleased to read it at the time, but it didn't stick," Harrison admitted. "We took some liberties. We constructed a story to see the journey of Buck finding his destiny and Thornton resolving his issues."

Ford is to executive produce Annapurna's drama series "The Staircase" and will reprise his role in the fifth presentation of Indiana Jones in 2021. His recent projects include voice-over in The Secret Life of Pets 2, and starring in Blade Runner 2049 with Ryan Gosling and as Han Solo in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

"I had dogs all my life. They gave me comfort and pleasure," Ford said when questioned about playing beside a dog. "The generated computer graphic, I think, is a major achievement. We had an actor/gymnast play the part of Buck (while filming)."

The Pulse of Entertainment: The Call of the Wild, a Heart-Warming and Tear-Jerking Adaptation

callofthewild.jpg
(February 21, 2020) - Based on a novel by Jack London, The Call of the Wild film is about a happy-go-lucky dog stolen from his Los Angeles home and sold to a mail-carrier for a dog-sled in Alaska and it arrives in theatres February 21, 2020. The 20th Century Studios presentation is a heart-warming and tear-jerking adaptation. Rated PG, it stars an animated dog named Buck, Academy Award winning Harrison Ford (Star Wars), and Omar Sy (X-Men: Days of Fury). Both of their destinies have them taken care of by Buck and they in turn, take care of Buck. Buck, a house dog, is forced to survive in the wild.

The Call of the Wild is the third film distributed by 20th Century Studios. After the acquisition of Fox by Disney, the 20th Century brand name changed to 20th Century Studios. The Call of the Wild is an epic tale and is a 3 Art Entertainment production. The adventure film used computer graphics to make Buck as real as I've seen animation since the latest adaptation of The Lion's King. The climax of the film is the struggles of house pet Buck surviving in the wild as a sled-dog with no training, while finding his natural instinct in order to endure and take his place as leader of a pack.

Directed by Chris Sanders, The Call of the Wild also stars Dan Stevens ("Downtown Abbey") as a heartless elite with gold-fever; three-time Emmy nominated Bradley Whitford ("The West Wing") as Judge Miller the original owner of Buck who spoiled him; Colen Woodell (The Originals) as an elite on the hunt for gold in the wild; Cara Gee (The Expanse) as a socialite on the hunt for gold in the wild; Karen Gillan (Doctor Who), and Scott MacDonald (Star Trek: Enterprise).

The process Dove Award nominated Murdock speaks on is recovery from addiction and in this musical stage play the Serenity House is where it happens. Shirley plays Sister Claire C. The Pulse of Entertainment: Queen, Mary, Missy Invest in Lifetimes' ‘The Clark Sisters' Bio-Movie

By Eunice Moseley

Lifetime_theclarksister_cast_AngelaBuchett_RavenGoodwin_sheleaFrazier_KierraSheard_ChristinaBell_Jan18_2020.jpg

(March 6, 2020) - A desire by filmmaker Dr. Holly Davis-Carter to honor the musical contributions of The Clark Sisters will come to its end April 11, 2020 at 8 p.m. ET when Lifetime airs an original biographical movie The Clark Sisters: First Ladies of Gospel, executively produced by Dr. Carter via her Revele Entertainment, along with music industry icons Queen Latifah, Mary J. Blige and Missy Elliott, plus Loretta Jones and Shakim Compere via his Flavor Unit. The film covers a certain time in the long history of the pioneers of Urban Contemporary Gospel.

In 1966 the children of Detroit Choir Director Dr. Mattie Moss-Clark - Jacky (18), Denise (13), Twinkie (12), Dorinda (9) and Karen (6) - formed a Gospel group. At a certain point Dr. Mattie gave the group over to Twinkie who started writing songs for the group. They signed a record deal with their uncle's label and released a debut album in 1973. By then the girls were ages 25, 20, 19, 16 and 13. It was the "Dr. Mattie Moss Clark Presents The Clark Sisters" album release that gave them recognition in the Detroit area. The following year they signed to Sounds of Gospel Records and released a live album "Is My Living in Vain" in 1974. That album stayed at #1 on Billboard Gospel Charts for an entire year.

The Lifetime Movie The Clark Sisters: First Ladies of Gospel stars Angela Birchett as Jacky; Raven Goodwin as Denise; Shelea Frazer as Dorinda; Kierra Sheard as Karen, and Christina Bell as Twinkie. Not only are these ladies excellent actresses they are wonderful vocalists as well. The Clark Sisters released 16 albums and won three Grammy Awards. Hits for The Clark Sisters include "You Brought the Sunshine" and "Expect a Miracle." They are noted as the highest selling female Gospel group in history.

"I got a call saying you need to audition for The Clark Sisters," said Christina Bell about how she obtained the role of Twinkie, the 3rd oldest Clark sister.

All the ladies' journeys that led to the role they have in Lifetimes' The Clark Sisters took different paths.

"My career continues to evolve, especially in the past four years," said Christina about her journey to the Lifetime Movies role. "My daughter said momma I want to move and that's what made me move...to Dallas, Texas and literally in two week I got a call to go on tour with Fred Hammond, to go on tour with Donnie McClurkin...then go on tour with John P. Kee."

Raven Goodwin's journey started at age 15 with a starring role in Nickelodeon's "Just Jordan." She went on to star in roles on Disney Family, ABC Family and BET.

"It's strange...that's why I know God has moved me because each year at a different age it leveled me up a bit," said Raven, who plays Denise the second oldest Clark sister, about her career up to this point. "At this point I'm taking the stirring wheel a little bit, making things happen for myself. I'm at that stage in my career where I know what I want and what I want it to look like.'

Angela Birchett (Broadway's "The Color Purple"), who plays Jacky the eldest, said about her career path, "The roles I've been able to play have been so me. I was like, ‘When am I going to be in situations where it's completely foreign?'"

The Clark Sisters is directed by Christine Swanson and also stars Aunjanue Ellis, Brandon McKnight, Ronnie Rowell, Chris Gleason, Simone Miller AND Danny Waugh. Producers include Dr. Carter, Queen Latifah and Steve Solomos. Lifetime is owned by A&E Networks, which is a joint venture between Disney Media's Walt Disney and Hearst Communications.

The story begins with Jeremy entering college and immediately falling for a girl he sees in the audience at a concert on campus who was showing a deep love for music. In getting to know her he learns her mind and heart are always focused on God. She shows him how to reach deep into his soul when writing his music. That sparks something in him as he begins to express his love and faith in God through his music and through story/testimony. Jeremy also meets Melissa's best friend who is a well known Christian singer on campus - Jean-Luc. After learning about Jeremy's guitar skills, Jean-Luc encourages him to come on stage to share his music - which the audience loved. This ignited his rise to the top of the Christian music charts - debuting in 2000. The climax of I Still Believe is just as exciting; when Jeremy asks Melissa to marry him at around the same time she learns she has advanced stomach cancer. Her faith in God's Will being what is best keeps her level headed throughout the ordeal as prayers were answered, as the two were married (in 2000) and as life takes an unexpected turn four months later.

As God has it, in life all bad experiences are a stepping stones to something bigger and better. With Melissa's love still in his heart, Jeremy took to the charts and made it to the top as a Christian singer/songwriter. Years later he meets a fan that reminds him of Melissa. Remembering what he promised Melissa before she passed - to love again - and seeing all the similarities in the two of them, Jeremy opened his heart up to love again and married his second wife Adrienne - a Christian Rock singer. He went on to release four studio albums and two live recordings. His music is Christian, Praise & Worship and Gospel - with Rock influence. Camp also won five Dove Awards and three American Music Awards. He has over 30 #1 hits on Christian radio and is an ordained minister.

Jeremy and his second wife Adrienne had three children - Isabelle Rose, Egan Thomas and Arianne Mae. Adrienne supported him in writing an autographical book about his first wife Melissa and even supports him in telling Melissa's story over and over again. God's Will, through all of life's bad adversities, is that "all things work out for the good, for those that love God and do according to His Word."

The Pulse of Entertainment: Chieli Minucci's Special EFX, Offers a Melting Pot of Exquisite Sounds

Chieli_Minucci_spaghetini_sealbeach.jpg
(March 17, 2020) - I was invited by Jazz guitarist Chieli Minucci to review his band Special EFX Featuring Chieli Minucci performance at Spaghettini's in Seal Beach, California. It was a couple of days after Valentine 's Day and Spaghettini's still had roses all around. In fact, just before the show I was offered a rose. Special EFX is touring to promote their latest album release "All Stars."

"Eunice?" said Chieli as I sat waiting for a drink at a table reserved for him

"Yes, thank you so much for inviting me! I love this place!" I replied back as my salad reached the table.

"You're welcome," he said. "I'll let you get back to your meal."

Minucci headed for the stage, which included a keyboardist, drummer, bass player and violinist.

His latest album release "All Stars" features Maysa Leak's vocals on his cover of "Little Wings;" Regina Carter on violin; David Mann on sax and flute; Lionel Cordew on drums; Jay Rowe on piano/keyboards; Jerry Brooks on bass; Lao Tizer on piano/keyboards; Mino Cinelu on percussion; Tatum Greenbelt on trumpet; Gerald Veasley on bass; Eric Marienthal on sax; Fernando Saunders on fretless bass; Steve Adelson on the Chapman stick; Joel Rosenblatt on drums; Antoine Silverman on violin; Lin Roundtree on trumpet; Mike Davis on trombone, and Nelson Rangell on sax.

Spaghettini's was full of attendees and it seems, by the applause, they were there for Special EFX Featuring Chieli Minucci - even though the food was outstanding and plentiful. Chieli started off showing his lead guitar skills which really impressed me. As he plays his repertoire of hits and current tracks from his latest album he let's each musician do their thing. For vocal assist they had a former American Idol contestant perform his latest singles. Even his violinist had a chance to perform her solo material. The Special EFX Featuring Chieli Minucci band offered us a melting pot of exquisite sounds worthy of a standing ovation. His 18-date tour to promote "All Stars" release arrives next to Maxwell C. King Center for the Performing Arts in Melbourne, Florida on March 21, 2020, at the Boscov's Berks Jazz Festival in Reading, Pennsylvania from April 2-4th, and ends at The Cutting Room in New York on April 11, 2020.

The Pulse of Entertainment: The ‘Vibrasonic' Album Release of the Vibes Alive Band is Sweet Eunice Moseley

dirkrichter_vibesalive.jpg

(March 20, 2020) - "It's a percussionist instrument of Central America and Africa. The bars are made of wood," said Vibraphonist Dirk Richter about the instrument he plays when I asked exactly what it was for my review of the March 6, 2020 album release of "Vibrasonic" (SwingDing Records). The project is written and produced by him and partner Emmy Nominated guitarist Randall Crissman - a duo called Vibes Alive. "It was popular with rituals - a piece of wood that makes tones. In 1920 a percussion company came up with the vibra-harp...that had metal bars. A tuner came up with a design for the vibraphone; it's just like the piano but with aluminum bars. It's a lot more, softer sounding."

Their third album, "Vibrasonic," offers ten selections that also feature instrumental assistance from Grammy winning keyboardist Jeff Lorber, whom Dirk calls their 3rd member; drummer Vinnie Colaiuta; bass player Jimmy Johnson, and percussionist Luis Conte. Vibes Alive debut was self-titled and the second album was titled "After Hours."

"It's a diffident play on words," Dirk said when asked what the title of the album "Vibrasonic" means.

Sonic is the range of the sound and "vibra" is the method of the sound delivered. Richter does go a little crazy on some of the selections while playing his vibraphone making the sound an authentic Jazz project which has a range that reaches the sky. My favorite cuts on the "Vibrasonic" album release include #2 "Vibrasonic," the title-track and single, which earned "Most Added" status on the Billboard Singles Chart, because it is sweet Jazz in its purest form. It also has some amazing guitar playing by Crissman that supports the vibraphone melody impressively well. I also love #6 "Going Home," again for its sweet Jazz sound, and how it combines the vibraphone with the keyboards, and I love how he takes the vibraphone to a sonic range with its high notes. The #9 track "Spy" is also a favorite because I love that 007 melody and how the vibraphone goes crazy wild - as spies often do.

"My partner is involved in the writing. We always played music together in college. This (album) is instead of playing live. We were always fawned of Jazz Fusion," Dirk confessed. "When George Duke went electric...swing became the standard. So when I had a chance to write music he (Crissman) liked it...a vibraphone with guitar - the harmony."

The Pulse of Entertainment:'Council of Dads' Pick Up the Parenting Slack in NBC's New Drama, Airs Tuesdays at 10 p.m. ET

nbc_councilofdads_cast.jpg

(March 24, 2020) - On March 24, 2020 NBC premiered its new drama series "Council of Dads" at 10pmET starring Tom Everett Scott ("Southland"), Emjay Anthony (It's Complicated), Sarah Wayne Callies ("Colony"), Blue Chapman, Steven Silver, Clive Standen ("Taken"), Michael O'Neill ("NCIS"), Thaila Tran, Michelle Weaver ("Nighthawks") and J. August Richards ("Angel"). "Council of Dads" is based on a book "The Council of Dads" by Bruce Feiler.

"Scott Perry discovers he has cancer. He enlists three friends... to pick up the slack when he is gone," said J. August Richards who plays Dr. Oliver Post - Scott's Oncologist.

Scott Perry's (Everett Scott) three friends are Anthony (Clive Standen), Larry (Michael O'Neill) and Oliver (J. August Richards). Scott and his wife Robin (Sarah Wayne Callies) have four kids - Theo (Emjay Anthony), Charlotte (Thaila Tran), JJ (Blue Chapman) and Hope - a newborn. His sister Luly (Michele Weaver), who was in college pursuing her dream, hears of the diagnosis and comes back home to also help with the four kids - while still pursuing her dreams. All this is the makings of a multi-layered story-line, which makes it worth taking a look.

"When developing a character I try not to bring from my previous characters, however I do notice a return theme about family...protecting family," said J. August about his new role in the NBC drama "Council of Dads." "Dr. Oliver has the ability to love. Now I find myself trying to make people laugh!"

"I play his Oncologist," Richards continues about his characters relationship with Scott Perry. "He has an aggressive form of cancer. He asked me and two others to be there for his kids. Be there for riding bikes, at graduations, etc... He doesn't make it and the three of us show up for life's challenges."

J. August Richards is a native of Washington, DC and was raised in Maryland - my home state. He went to USC School of Dramatic Arts on scholarship. He seem to have been on the fast road to "Hollywood success" with credits that include WB's "Angel," Notorious, NBC's "Conviction," "The West Wing," "The 4400," CBS' "CSI: Miami," "Grey's Anatomy," "The Mentalist," and ABC's "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D."

The Pulse of Entertainment: Nickelodeon's ‘Danger Force' Spin-Off Airs Saturdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT

Eunice Moseley

Nickelodeon_dangerforce_L2R_HavanFlores_DanaHeath_LucaLuhan_TerrenceLittleGardenhigh_courtesyNIck.jpg

(March 27, 2020) - "We don't understand our powers. We're kids trying to figure it out," said Dana Heath. Dana is a 13 year-old actress who plays Mika, a super-hero in-training, in Nickelodeon's "Danger Force" - a spin-off of their hit comedy series "Henry Danger." The "Danger Force" series will premiere on Nickelodeon Saturday, March 28, 2020 at 8 p.m./ET/PT and will air every Saturday thereafter for a total of 13 weeks.

"That is super right," added Terrence Little Gardenhigh about the theme of the show. Terrence is a 12 year-old actor who plays Miles - another super-hero in-training. "The writers are good at making things funny. We're kids; we don't know how to use our powers. Mistakes are made."

Along with Mika and Miles, there are two other super-heroes in-training - Chapa, played by Havan Flores ("Henry Danger") and Bose, played by Luca Luhan ("Henry Danger"). They attend the Swellview Academy for the Gifted and on the show they are trying to balance their family life with their super-hero life - while keeping it all secret.

When I asked Dana and Terrence if there was uncontrollable laughter on the set of a Nickelodeon comedy show, Dana said, "You hit it. There are so many times we tried not to break and someone starts laughing."

"It happens all the time," Terrence added.

"There was a...part...Terrence made a face...I had the inability to get back in character," Dana gave an example, still laughing about it. "Miles' character is serious and I was trying to be."

"Danger Force" also stars Cooper Barnes as Ray and Michael D. Cohen as Schwoz who run the school for the gifted.

Dana and Terrence both acted on episodes of Nickelodeon's "Henry Danger." Terrence comes from Olympia, Washington and Dana from Miami Beach, Florida. Dana started out as a model at age four and gravitated to the theatre. Since then her acting has garnered her roles on Disney Channel's "Sydney to the Max" and Disney Junior's "Fancy Nancy." Terrence started at the age of eight doing commercials (Boys & Girls Club of America) and later obtained roles in Disney Channel's "Just Roll with It" and ABC's "Speechless."

"We auditioned," said Dana when I asked how they landed a leading role in the new Nickelodeon comedy series. "I didn't know what it was for. I said this person is like me. I had call backs, then guess who walked in - Terrence. I knew him and I knew we'd have a good brother sister chemistry. We had so much fun...and we did have the chemistry."

"It was a very long process," Terrence added. "It's been like 2 years...and I feel like we are brother and sister. We call each other bro and sis!"

What a delightful and inspiring show. "Danger Force" airs on Nickelodeon each Saturday at 8 p.m. ET/PT.

The Pulse of Entertainment: A Star is Born, Sophie Fatu is Her Name and ‘Love Is...' Is Her Hot Debut EP

sophiefatu.jpg
(March 31, 2020) - Seven years-old, Sophie Fatu, makes her vocal debut with the release of "Love Is..." (Extraordinary Records). The EP project is full of Classical Jazz cover songs recorded in the infamous Capitol Studios where Jazz great Frank Sinatra recorded - the studios first artist outside of Capitol Records' artists.

When I asked the vocal prodigy, who vocals has the sound of a Shirley Temple and Judy Garland mix, if this was her first time recording she said, "Yes, It's my first time ever. I enjoyed it so much. I felt so happy. I couldn't believe it was in the same studio used by Frank Sinatra!"

What a thrill it must have been. Managed by her mother Victoria Fatu, a classically trained pianist and backed by her father Cristian Fatu, a classically trained violinist, Sophie is well on her way. She has put her heart and soul into six sings of Frank Sinatra, Nina Simone, and Frankie Lymon.

"She performs a lot," said Victoria about the little superstar who has performed on NBC's "Little Big Shots" hosted by Steve Harvey, "America's Got Talent" (at 5 years-old) and "The Ellen DeGeneres Show".

The album features musical assistant from her parents, Jeff Hamilton on drums, Chuck Berghofer on bass and Tom Ranier on piano. Producers of the project include her mother Victoria and Greg Curtis, president of Extraordinary Records. It also includes a 13 piece horn section and a 14 piece string section.

"She's seven years-old. She was six when she recorded it," Victoria added. "She is the youngest to record at Capitol Studios."

Hearing her, you will know why Capitol Studios open their doors to her. My favorite songs on the project include #2 "Goody Goody," a Frankie Lymon cover, because she puts so much fun in it, it left me wanting to see her perform it on stage. I also like #4 "All The Way," a Frank Sinatra cover, because I can hear her maturing vocally and it was impressive. Last I like #5 "Feeling Good," a Nina Simone cover, because it starts off with her singing a cappella giving it a feel of an Ole' African hymn, then suddenly music starts playing and it becomes a beautiful transition into a hot Jazz number.

The Pulse of Entertainment: Isaac Carree's Love Tribute Hits Billboard's Top 20 Gospel Singles

Dr. Eunice Moseley

Isaac-Carree-Her.jpg

(April 3, 2020) - A North Carolina native, Isaac Carree reached for the impossible not knowing what the reward would be, and received a reward that has made him forever one of the best artists in the history books on Contemporary Gospel. He has only released three albums, all produced by two-time Grammy Award winning Blac Elvis. The last album released is titled "No Risk, No Reward" (Shanachie Entertainment) and its single, "Her," has hit Billboard's Top 20 Gospel Singles Chart.

"It's a song to highlight who she is to me. To celebrate her greatness and beauty," said Isaac of the single "Her". "Sixteen years married. Men don't express verbally how they feel. It's an everyday process. One day it's great and one day it's rough."

Also a producer, Carree started out in 1996 as an artist in the Gospel group Men of Standard. He launched his solo career in 2011. His last album before "No Risk, No Reward," was released seven years ago, but yet his impact on the Contemporary Gospel industry was such that he could enlist for this new album Kirk Franklin, Zacardi Cortez, Lisa Knowles, Mr. Talkbox and Jazze Pha - outstanding. Isaac told me that his greatest achievement is "longevity."

"Being able to be relevant for 30 years...Awards come and go, you sell records sometimes and sometimes you don't. Staying in power and recreating yourself - very few have achieved that," he said when I asked.

Isaac Carree has garnered Dove and BMI Awards as an artist and a producer. Atlanta based, in between albums Isaac has toured on the Bad Boys Reunion Tour and Tim McGraw & Faith Hill's Soul II Soul World Tour. He became an author when he published a book titled "Service: My Words, My Life, My Truth."

"You have to step out on faith and not act out of fear...to hear God say I'm pleased," Carree added when I asked about the meaning behind this project, "No Risk, No reward." "In life you never know what the reward is. You have to take risks."

The Pulse of Entertainment: Under the Lake Makes Waves with New CD Release ‘Your Horizon Too'

underthelakeband.jpg

(April 7, 2020) - "The last 20 years I've been playing with sax player Quintin Gerard. Quintin's on this album. He was working on his album and had a track named ‘Your Horizon.' It inspired me to make ‘Your Horizon Too'. It became a theme in us getting back together," said keyboardist Jayson Tipp about him and his band Under the Lake's newest project "Your Horizon Too" (Mind In Overdrive).

The band, 28 years-old, includes Jayson on keys; Gerard on sax and flute; Nathan Brown on bass; Richard Sellers on drums, and Patrick Yandall on lead and acoustic guitar. The "Your Horizon Too" album was released in early April and is produced by Jayson Tipp.

"This album goes back to Smooth Jazz," Tipps pointed out.

I agree, because in reviewing it I came away loving #1 "It's Your Horizon" because of Patrick's guitar playing breathing life into the song like a new sunrise brings forth a new day. I also like #2 "People Make the World Go Round," a cover of The Stylistics' hit, because the guitar playing by Patrick sings the familiar lyrics and the sax playing gives it that original classic sound. The #6 track, "Side Two," is a favorite because I love the way the sax makes waves and the guitar tap dances. I also like #8 "Diego Nuevo" because it's a happy song and I'm addicted to happiness, and I also like the way the keys cuts in bringing in a little mystery. The last song on the "Your Horizon Too" album is #9 "Josie" because it is a simple and sweet Smooth Jazz selection.

"The Under the Lake band has had different players through the years. Those working with me for the last 20 years include Nathan, Richard and Quintin," Jayson pointed out about his band. "All four of us are back together - a home coming. We added Patrick, a long time friend. He is on all 12 tracks."

The Pulse of Entertainment: Urban Gospel's Maurice Smith Takes a Walk with Christ on New Single ‘I Still Believe'

Eunice Moseley

maurice_reggie_smith.jpg

(April 10, 2020) - "It's about my walk with Christ," Urban Gospel's Maurice Smith said about his latest single "I Still Believe" produced by Doobie Powell (The Clark Sisters). "I came to the realization I still believe. Everybody's road is different."

Maurice said seeing what happens in the music industry can be discouraging.

"I had to step back and really learn the truth about me," he said. "To believe..."

Smith started in the music industry as a backup vocalist for such industry heavy hitters as Estelle, Sinead O'Connor, Robin Gibbs of the Bee Gee's, Tears of Joy, Hezekiah Walker, Yolanda Adams, Jonathan Nelson and Dorinda Clark-Cole. He has performed on BET's "Bobby Jones Gospel" and "106 & Park" and NBC's "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.' Maurice is lead vocalist for Trevone Perry & Devine Purpose and Anthony Ponder & Ministry's Desire.

In explaining his discovery about disbelief he said, "The root of it all is disbelief. People change their sex because of disbelief in how God made them. You overcome disbelief with belief. Even though it's plain and insight they don't believe. I do believe there is a point where God has to reveal himself."

As a soloist he debuted in 2014 with the single "You're All I Want," which was followed in 2017 with "You are Great." His third single, "I Still Believe," was recently released as the lead single to his 2020 debut EP.

"Trust God will give you what you need," Maurice emphasized. "Once you know how to believe, you can't go back."

The Pulse of Entertainment: Lindsey Webster Puts R&B Flavor to ‘A Woman Like Me' Jazz CD Release

lindseyWebster.jpg

(April 14, 2020) - "I love to make music and I am fortunate enough I get to do that for my career," said Billboard Jazz Chart-Breaker Lindsey Webster about the inspiration behind her becoming a professional Jazz vocalist. Her latest project is on the Shanachie Entertainment imprint titled, "A Woman Like Me."

The "A Woman Like Me" project features assistance from bass players Nathan East and Fred Doumbe (also both supply background vocals); drummer Vinnie Colaiuta; percussionist Luis Conte; guitarists Mike Demicco, Chris Harris and Tony Depaolo; saxophonist Ken Gioffre and pianist Keith Slattery - who also produced the album.

"We started recording right after the 2018 release," she added. "I love writing; it's a big outlet for me. We flew to Los Angeles to work with some new musicians. I still have four regulars, but I tried to get a different vibe."

Lindsey unique way of combining R&B and Smooth Jazz garnered her two Billboard #1s and seven Billboard Top 10 Contemporary Jazz Chart toppers. She also made Billboard history by being the first female vocalist in this chart category to garner#1 since iconic Sade'. The projects' current single is "Feels Like Forever." "A Woman Like Me" offers 11 selections and is written by Lindsey and producer Slattery - except for the cover of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow."

"We had our single ‘Fool Me Once" stay for about four weeks...the only other on the Smooth Jazz Chart was Sade's ‘Soldier of Love,' which stayed on for three weeks," Lindsey pointed out about her Billboard history-breaker.

Lindsey Webster was also honored with Billboard's "Contemporary Jazz Artist of the Year" for two years.

"The whole experience was different," she said when asked. "All the previous albums were recorded in New York, but we flew to Los Angeles and recorded where Frank Sinatra, Michael Jackson and Lionel Ritchie recorded. It's still us, our talent, but diffidently an enlightening experience."

My favorite cuts on the "A Woman Like Me" Shanachie project include #5 "Perspective," because I love the sax solo opening by Ken Gioffre and its R&B feel; #6 "Running Around," because it has a nice Jazz flow and the lead guitar solo by Tony Depaolo is so sweet, and #7 "A Woman Like Me," title track, because of the passionate vocals of Lindsey which has a soulful R&B flavor I love."

The Pulse of Entertainment: R&B's K'Jon is Fortunate to be Blessed on New Single ‘Live, Love & Laughter'

Eunice Moseley

k_jon-compressed.jpg

(April 17, 2020) - "I'm fortunate, some artists can't make a living - I'm blessed," said R&B Chart-topping singer/songwriter K'Jon about his longevity in the music business. K'Jon is currently promoting his newest single "Live, Love and Laughter" (Shanachie Entertainment).

K'Jon is actually considered a Soul singer, but he has six consecutive weeks at the top of Billboard's R&B Charts for his single "On the Ocean." That single also garnered the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Song Chart's longest run with 75 weeks on the chart.

"I think I've gained young fans since the hit song because of their parents," K'Jon laughed when asked if the younger generation is into Soul singers. "I touch three generations of listeners - their parents and their parent's parents - their grandparents - like the sound. Kids' teachers play it to calm the class down!"

The "On the Ocean" hit he talks about was on his debut album "I Get Around" in 2009 on Universal Republic. It hit #1 on the Urban AC Radio Chart and #12 on Billboard's R&B Chart. His second release, "Moving On," was on the Shanachie imprint in 2012. The single release from that project was "Will You Be There?" Both projects were produced by Seven the General. It is not indicated whether the "Live, Love and Laughter" single is the prelude to a new Shanachie album, but let's look at for one from the Soulful Detroit singer K'Jon anyway.

"At the time of ‘On the Ocean' there were a lot of icons at the top that I was battling with," K'Jon added about breaking a Billboard record by staying on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Song Chart for 75 consecutive weeks. "It was friendly...competition. There was Charlie Wilson, Aretha Franklin and Maxwell's ‘Pretty Wings'."

"We're the #1 independent label in the country - all over the world," he informed me when we were talking about how much money unknown independent labels can make. "I started independently...singing around my living room, Virtually unknown - I'm still unknown."

Unknown but his Soulful vocals speak for themselves, with record sales that indicate listener don't care who you are, they just want good quality vocal and honest lyrics that will touch their souls, hearts and lives.

"You certainly can enjoy it," K'Jon laughed a little about the single. "Kids won't be mad."

"I put a lot of time in the regular workforce," he said. "I wouldn't have chosen it (singing for a living) out the gate. I was singing as a backup singer and I would moonlight and go to the studios and record. I was laid off and I said (to his wife), ‘Let's see what will happen if I put this beat to some of my work.' It was a couple of weeks later when I got a call."

I guess, as they say the rest is history, as he focused on selling his soulful vocals and lyrical skills via his deals with Universal Republic and Shanachie Entertainment.

The Pulse of Entertainment: Michele Weaver Takes on New Role on NBC in ‘Council of Dads' Drama

micheleweaver_councilofdads.jpg

(April 21, 2020) - "She's a young ambitious dreamer," Michele Weaver (Nighthawk) said of her new role as Luly in the new NBC drama "Council of Dads." "She was encouraged to go to New York...to accomplish her dream when she finds out her dad is ill. So she navigates that to support him...its really about sacrifice."

The "Council of Dads" drama series is based on a book, "The Council of Dads," by Bruce Feiler. It also stars Tom Everett Scott ("Southland"), Emjay Anthony, Sarah Wayne Callies, Blue Chapman, Steven Silver, Clive Standen, Michael O'Neill, Thaila Tran, and J. August Richards (Marvel's "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.").

Scott Perry (Everett Scott) is told by his physician Dr. Oliver Post (J. August Richards) that he has cancer and not long to live. Perry enlists Dr. Post and two others - Anthony (Clive Standen) and Larry (Michael O'Neill) - to fill in for him as dad to his four youngest kids when he passes. So "Council of Dads" is about how the three of them are there for his wife Robin (Sarah Wayne Callies) and their children -Theo (Emjay Anthony), Charlotte (Thaila Tran), JJ (Blue Chapman) and Hope (a newborn).

When asked if there were any similarities in her and her new character Luly, who is from a previous marriage, Michele said, "Doing what you have to do and not what you want to do - I can completely relate to that."

Weaver, who received a Theatre of the Arts Scholarship, film credits, aside from the film Nighthawk, includes Illicit with Vivica A. Fox, Sister Code with Amber Rose, Drew Sidora and Eva Marcille, and Superpowers. Television credits include "Switched at Birth" and "2 Lava 2 Lantula".

The drama, "Council of Dads," premiered with ratings at almost four million viewers. That is pretty good when you compare it to the premiere viewer ratings for "Black-ish" at 2.50 million and "For Life" starring 50 Cent at 3 million.

The Pulse of Entertainment: Blues Living Legend Rev. John Lee Hooker, Jr. Releases Gospel CD ‘Testify'

Eunice Moseley

rev_JohnLeeHookerJrt.jpg

(April 24, 2020) - "I received my first Grammy nomination in Blues in 2004," said Rev. John Lee Hooker, Jr. about his career accolades. Rev. Hooker, Jr. just released his first Gospel project "Testify" featuring lead guitarist Alvon Johnson. "My second Grammy nomination was in Traditional Blues in 2008. I've gone from Blues to the Good News."

The first single off the Detroit native's "Testify" album is "My God is Holy," written by Rev. Hooker, Jr. It was released with an accompanying music video. "Testify" is produced by Grammy Award winning Larry D. Batiste (Charlie Wilson, Michael Bolton).

"I wrote ‘Testify'. It has my (Blues) sound, but the lyrics are about testifying to the power of the Lord, Jesus Christ. I went from darkness to light. I've been shot, stabbed, homeless and He delivered me."

Like most, Rev. John Lee Hooker, Jr. took the Light of God for granted, succumbing to the hopelessness that the "dark" can bring. Being raised in the church because his grandfather was a Pastor, Hooker, Jr. knew about the light and the hope that it brings. Christ never leaves us sometimes we get blinded by the darkness and can't see our way to the light.

"In 1987-88 I was ordained," he informed me. "Then I went into the world of music. I learned I can't mix church and the world."

Rev. John Lee Hooker, Jr. started singing at the age of eight, live, on the radio and was touring the country with his father, iconic Blues singer and lead guitarist John Lee Hooker known for creating the "Boogie" and was labeled soon after the "king of the Boogie." Rev. John Lee Hooker, Jr. made a big name for himself in the music business as a Blues singer. His vocals have supported such icons as Betty Wright and Grammy winning Larry Batiste. He has performed alongside B.B. King, Lenny Kravitz, Etta James, the Rolling Stones and Snoop Dogg. In 2018 Rev. John Lee Hooker, Jr. received the "Bobby Blues Bland Life-Time Achievement" Award.

"My main objective is to spread His name," Rev. Hooker, Jr. said about his first Gospel project. "To show those who may be going through something that He'll get you out of it. I spent a lot of my life in jail. I'm going back to the Super Max Prison, where I was at 23, to perform. It's so surreal."

Rev. John Lee Hooker, Jr. will be touring to promote "Testify" with his band - bass player John Pride; guitar player Jeffrey Horan; drummer Mike Rogers; keyboard player Elder Paul Sylvester; guitarist Rick Mightybone; trombone player Feliciano, and sax player Doug Rowan.

The Pulse of Entertainment: Rapper Tru Trilla is Still in the Battle, with Solo Release ‘God of Barz'

trutrilla.jpg

(May 1, 2020) - "I'm still in the battle," said New Jersey Rapper Tru Trilla (050 Boyz) about what motivated the May 29, 2020 release of a new solo album "God of Barz" (New Dawn Records/Ingrooves/Universal). "I'm bringing back lyrics and content...I've been grinding."

For this new album Tru Trilla enlisted the help of Confucious, Prince AK, Middy Murdock and Fly Kwa. Clinton Place (Ice Cube, Mack 10), Sumerio Square, Chat One, and DNA Beatz are guest producers for the project.

"You have to become who created you," Trilla said sincerely. "What created you is who you are. People are going external, people need to look inside."

Tru Trilla feels you really have to open yourself up to the idea in order to reach that next level where you understand just how power you really are. I told him I can relate. To me that's the concept of Jesus Christ, him being who that was in him - God. In the Bible (John 14:10) Jesus said, "Don't you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me?"

On the "God of Barz" album you will find cuts like "God's Mercy," "Word of God," "Fake Views", and "God's Sympathy." Tru Trilla is also part of the Hip-Hop group 050 Boyz which received worldwide recognition for their "050 Everything" 2015 album. In March, 2020 Tru Trilla released an EP, "The Seymour Chronicles".

The Pulse of Entertainment: Grammy Nominated Rev. Luther Barnes Tells Us to ‘Look to the Hills' on New CD

Eunice Moseley

RevLutherBarnes.jpg

(May 5, 2020) - "He wrote ‘Rough Side of the Mountain,'" said Grammy nominated Rev. Luther Barnes about his father, the late Rev. F.C. Barnes.

Rev. Luther Barnes releases on May 29, 2020 a new album that follows that "Rough Side of the Mountain" message with "Look to the Hills" (Shanachie Entertainment). The "Look to the Hills" album features the Restoration Worship Center Choir, Huey Williams, Jarrell Smalls, and Doc McKenzie. Its first single, the title track, is becoming a Top 20 Gospel Radio hit.

"The single has been out since January. I wrote it. Something to bring us into the New Year," Rev. Barnes explained. "With money problems and health issues, we don't have answers. We need to look to the hills because it's going to get better. God's got it under control."

Rev. Barnes has been part of the Gospel music industry for over 30 years and has garnered three hits. His last album "The Flavor of God" was released after a seven year absence and its single "God's Grace" became the biggest Gospel hit in 2017.

"I received the Grammy nomination actually in 2004 for the song ‘It's Your Time.'" He said. "I was fortunate to go to college to study music. I wrote songs in church."

As a Gospel vocalist Rev. Luther Barnes started out as a member of The Sunset Jubilaires. His expertise in songwriting and vocal delivery made him a Gospel legend whose songs, just like his father's, will be played by the Gospel industry long after he has gone "home."

"I've been a Pastor since 2014," Rev. Barnes added. "The name of the church is Restoration Worship Center. The choir from the church, my family, is 30-40 people who do very well. It's my second recording with them. It's my father's church, he passed away in 2011. Three years later I started my own church."

The Pulse of Entertainment: Tiarah Williams Crowned Little Miss North America on June 6, 2020 in DC at the Kennedy Center

Tiarah_Williams_LMNA2020.jpg

(May 8, 2020) - "It feels amazing," said Tiarah Williams, winner of the Little Miss North America contest. Tiarah will be crowned June 6, 2020 at a ceremony to take place at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. "It's because of my mom and dad and others work very hard to get me where I am."

The Little Miss North America (LMNA) contest is an online natural beauty competition for girls ages 7-12 that live in the United States. The LMNA organization helps to raise thousands of dollars for their Victoria Siegel Foundation.

"When I grow up I want to still be a dancer and a lawyer," Tiarah said when asked about her career goals. "May be one day, just may be, Miss America."

I have no doubt of that. If you talk to her you would have no doubt either. According to Tiarah's mother Tara, it was Tiarah's grandmother that saw her natural ability to dance at the age of three and urged her parents, Tara and Thomas Williams, to get her involved.

"It takes a village," Tara said about her daughters' journey to becoming a trained dancer and now Little Miss North America.

An Honor-Roll student from Washington, DC, 10 year-old Tiarah is not only a professionally trained dancer but a Toy Reviewer who has appeared on ABC's "Let's Talk Live" as a toy expert.

"I've been dancing since I was three," said the newly elected Little Miss North America.

Her mother added, "Her grandmother put her into a dance class...called the Star Makers Academy. She had her first competition at age three in Atlanta."

The Pulse of Entertainment: Bishop Kervy Brown Wants You to Know Christ is ‘Coming Back Again' on New Single

Bishop_KervyBrown4.jpg

(May 15, 2020) - "People keep asking, ‘When you coming out,'" said Bishop Kervy Brown about why he released a new single titled "Coming Back Again" (Uplifting Music in the Spotlight/Devine Jamz).

The Bishop heads the Greater Deliverance Temple, called the Praise Headquarters in Danville, Virginia. He is known for his very soulful vocals during the delivery of God's Word as part of his ministry.

He was ordained as a Pastor in 2009 and became a Bishop in 2018. His road to becoming a Bishop, with a powerful vocal ministry, began at the age of five in New York where he was raised. He said to me that his ministry and singing started at the same time. I can see him now at five years-old singing with his mother, Mary Brown, who was the lead singer of a Gospel group called The Faith Gospel Singers and his vocal mentor. At the tender age of 10 years-old, though a member of a Methodist church, Kervy decided he wanted to be a member of the Bethel Way of the Cross Church of Christ, lead by Bishop James Hicks, and his parents let him.

Bishop Brown went on to become a professional Gospel singer performing with such Gospel greats as James Cleveland and Rev. Charles Hicks. He then became the lead vocalist in Bishop Hezekiah Walkers' "Love Fellowship Crusade" Choir. It was as a member of this choir where Brown became a recording artist appearing as the lead vocalist on the Hezekiah Walker "Lord Do It" project.

"The pandemic came...and I was trying to figure out what I can say to encourage the people in this time," the Bishop said continuing to talk about the reason for the release of the "Coming Back Again" single. "This song came to my mind. I thought it would be a blessing to the body of Christ."

When I asked if we can expect an album to follow Bishop Kervy Brown said, "I just want to put this single out for now."

So Bishop Brown is out with another recording project that has a message reminding the world not to panic, that Jesus Christ is coming back again.

The Pulse of Entertainment: Afrobeats/Pop Artist Janeliasoul Says ‘Things Will Get Better' on New Single

Eunice Moseley

Janeliasoul2.jpg

(May 19, 2020) - "I get on the guitar and record," said Afrobeats/Pop artist Janeliasoul about her song writing process. The Baltimore resident recently digitally released a new single "Things Will Get Better" for the purpose of uplifting spirits to inspire hope. "I actually wrote the song a long time ago. I was going through something. It is my higher self consoling the doubting self."

Nigerian born, with American roots Janeliasoul also has a seven-piece band by the same name that infuses Soul and Jazz into an Afrobeats/Pop sound.
"I thought, there are people out there that felt the same," Janeliasoul said about the new single. "So if it can touch one person then I'm satisfied."

Janeliasoul is still riding on the success of her last album "I Am a Grown Woman," a salute to Beyonce's hit song "Grown Woman." Her single from this project "Love-Hate" was accompanied by a music video which received over a million views on Youtube. Her debut was an EP titled "Self Affirmation Project," which had a lead single "I Am Bold" that became a hit in the Afrobeats circle.

The singer/songwriter started in the music business while growing up in Nigeria. She learned traditional Yoruba-Folk, which led to her love of Soul and Jazz.

"I had a bunch of plans coming up this summer, but the negativity this pandemic brought about, a show just got cancelled and it's in July," she said frustratingly.

The panic provoked by the media and politicians concerning this new strain of an old virus started a domino effect on closures throughout the country.

"They cancelled everything through the summer," she said about the company hosting the series of concerts she was booked for. "They are not sure how long its going to last because schools are closed for the rest of the year."

The result for Janeliasoul is the release of the "Things Will Get Better" single. It is what gave her some comfort and she hopes the song will bring others comfort as well.

The Pulse of Entertainment: Country/Pop's Therese Marie Re-Release ‘American Beauty' Single with Music Video

thereseMarie.jpg
(May 22, 2020) - "I am re-releasing the single, but I just released another song as well," said Therese Marie, a Hip-Hop Country/Pop singer/songwriter who is re-releasing her single "American Beauty," featuring St. Louis rapper Zeus Rebel Waters (formerly known as Rukapuf), along with an accompanying music video in September, and whose current single "East Side Party" is a collaboration with Hip-Hop living legend Snoop Dogg. "I was opening for Little John, had a Denver concert at Mile High, which seats 30,000, when all those shows were canceled with the corona. The music video is for a song I wrote 8 years ago."

Therese Marie plans to go on tour in the Fall of 2020 after the re-release of her "American Beauty" single and music video. The single "American Beauty" (Jade Wind Music) is produced by Jim Callahan and "East Side Party" is produced by DHawk.

"I made good contacts," she said when asked about how the re-release and music video came to be. She said she met a videographer and publicist all around the same time who helped her with the video and getting it on major networks such as VH1 and TNT. "The song ("American Beauty") is a fun Pop song about how two treat a woman and it has a cute video."

An East St. Louis native, Therese Marie picked up the guitar at a reform school around age 12 and fell in love with it. At the school she taught herself how to play the guitar and the piano. With the help of a fellow student she co-wrote her first song and she had her first performance when she sang for one of the Nuns at the school. Therese Marie went on to attend the College of Ozarks where she performed in theatre projects that garnered her awards.

"I'm in St. Louis moving back to Texas," Therese Marie said when I asked where she was in the country. "My family is from there...my music producer lives in Dallas."

The Pulse of Entertainment: David Billingsley Honors ‘Hymns from Grandma's Living Room' with Debut CD Release

Dr. Eunice Moseley

DavidBillingsley.jpg

(May 26, 2020) - "I want to bring people back to the roots," said soulful vocalist David Billingsley about the reason for recording his recent debut album release titled, "Hymns from Grandma's Living Room" (Devine Jamz). "...Back to Gospel hymns and how we do it."

Billingsley was a child prodigy from Wisconsin playing proficiently the piano, organ, drums and tambourine by age six. By age 11 he was a professional musician. He credits performing in his grandmother's living room as where he crafted his extraordinary talents.

"I sang the (title) song at my grandmother's funeral. I learned its not about you as an artist, it's about what the people are in need of," Billingsley pointed out about the titled song and lead single "Hymns from Grandma's Living Room."

So with this song he wrote for his grandmother David Billingsley constructed his debut project. A project he hopes will evoke for listeners their life-changing moments that started in the church and ended in grandma's living room after church.

"I actually did it all at once," he said of the recording process.

David went on to attend college in Minnesota and while there be played professionally for Grammy winning Sounds of Blackness. He went on to play keyboards and sing background vocals for Stokley and the Vu as they tour around the world. In 2017 he launched the David Billingsley School of Music and Arts for grades K-12. His school was geared towards kids who lacked access to high quality music and arts education in Minnesota.

"I was the only black kid...in class and did not know it was racial, about money. That access changed my life," David explained about why he launched his school for children who did not have the access to quality schooling in the arts as he did. "He (God) put this in me at a young age....by age 14 I knew I was going to start a school because of this. We received over 100 kids the first day. The second year we had a studio...so we mastered in school."

He said each student leaves his school with a mastered album. Today the David Billingsley School of Music & Arts is partnering with local schools in Minnesota where he continues to education kids that have no quality access to music and the arts with a quality education.

The Pulse of Entertainment: Jazz Vocalist Tracye Eileen Offers ‘It's Time,' a Sweet Five-Song EP

tracyeEillen_credit_chicagoEntertainmentAgency.jpg

(May 29, 2020) - "It's a five song EP that I started working on immediately after my last project," R&B/Jazz singer Tracye Eileen said about the June 12, 2020 release of "Somehow Someway" and its lead single out now titled "It's Time."

Tracye lovingly talked about her band, which has a residency at Buddy Guy's Legends in Chicago and has performed with Tracye as opening act for Babyface, The Stylistics, Mary Wilson, Chante Moore and After 7. Members of the band featured on the EP include Terry Barker on drums; Simeon Baker on bass, Donald Hayes on sax and flute, Perkins on sax, and Tom Viatsas on keyboardist. The project is produced Kendall Duffie and co-written by Duffie and Tracye.

"My band is an amazing group of musicians in Chicago," Eileen said. "We've been together for eight years. It's our second project. It's my first time working together...with Kendall. He might write the hook or verse and I'll do it around that. He ultimately turns it into what I wanted to say. It's cool how that comes together."

Tracye Eileen started singing since the 3rd grade. She said she got diverted but in 2012 decided she wanted to pursue her passion and released her debut Jazz album "Love's Journey." In 2018 she released "Why Did I Say Yes" and the titled single was a hit. The single is included twice on her current project "It's Time" - the original and a mixed "house" version.

"I love singing and writing about love," she said.

My favorite cuts on the five song EP include #3 "Sweeter With Time" because it's a sweet selection and has nice vocal harmony and #4 "Why Did I Say Yes" because the musicians and Tracye seem to come alive as if they connected with the lyrics, and Hayes on flute and Eileen's vocals went crazy as only pure Jazz can do.

The Pulse of Entertainment: Grammy Nominated Eric Roberson Releases New Album ‘Hear From Here' and its Single ‘Already Knew You'

Eunice Moseley

eric_roberson_black_and_white.jpg

(June 2, 2020) - "I found myself home, I tour a lot, so first thing was I went to music and started turning the equipment on...trying to relieve some stress," said R&B/Neo's two-time Grammy nominated Eric "Erro" Roberson about how his 16th project, "Hear from Here," was made. The album is off of his imprint Blue Erro Soul, with a single "Already Knew You" out. "I had a window of time. It's funny how God works."

The "Hear from Here" album is his 16th project, which consists of 12 studio albums, three EPs and one live album. Eric attended Howard University and received a degree in Musical Theatre. He is a proficient singer, songwriter and producer. He released his first single in 1994 off of his debut album at Warner Bros. Records, which is still yet to be released. On June 15, 2001 he released "The Esoteric Movement" (P-Vine). In 2002 he became a member of Jazzy Jeff's Touch of Jazz Production company and contributed to Jeff's "The Magnificent" album. The year 2003 saw the July 1st release of "The Vault, Vol. 1" from his own label Blue Erro Soul, with "The Vault, Vol. 1.5" released the following year on February 24, 2004. Roberson did not stop; on November 7, 2005 he released "The Appetizer" (Blue Erro Soul). On August 10, 2006 he released his first live album "Erro Live Vol. DC" (Blue Erro Soul). His next release was "...Left" (Blue Erro Soul) on February 27, 2007. Eric went on to release "Music Fan First" (Blue Erro Soul) on August 25, 2009, which garnered him two Grammy nominations and a spot for the first time on Billboard's R&B Chart at #89. On November 8, 2011 he released "Mister Nice Guy" on his own label with distribution this time via Purpose Records/Eone and a #14 position on Billboard's R&B Chart. On March 22, 2013 Eric released "United Tenors" with assistance from Fred Hammond, Dave Hollister, and Brian Courtney Wilson via Verity/RCA Inspiration. In 2014, on his own label with distribution from Liaison, he released "The Box" on August 12th, which reached #19 on the R&B charts. With new distribution from Foreign Exchange Music Roberson released "Tigallerro" with assistance from Phonte on July 22, 2016 and it too reached #19 on R&B charts. In 2017 he released three EPs, "Earth" on April 21st, "Wind" on July 21st and "Fire" on October 20th solely on his own label. This year, 2020, he released "Hear from Here" on April 3rd on Blue Erro Soul. Erro has also worked with such artists as Boney James, Dwele, and Vivian Green.

Eric Roberson said that when he was in the forced stay-at-home he posted the music he was making and saw how he was helping people. So he decided to release it as an album.

"I had a whole other album done," he confessed when talking about the "Hear From Here" project. "But I said this is an album. If I can get it to more people, I can get to help more people. For the most part it's the soundtrack to our struggle. Songs to give you motivation to walk, march and protest."

Eric said it's natural to sing songs through your struggles and he felt these songs wanted to be out first to help the nation in its struggle.

"I completed the whole album in four weeks time. Everyday waking up and the song was there. I remember sitting at the piano trying to figure out the chord and another song came to me, ‘Tonight'. That was the mood I was in. Two-three o'clock in the morning I remember posting me singing it. I woke up to 100s of ‘likes.'," Eric said. "I said this is bigger than me...so I put it out."

"I'm a proud songwriter. God is real in songwriting. I've been given songs I'm not wise enough to write about. I firmly believe in more listening than anything, to what God is telling you...what your heart is telling you."

As the album says, "Hear From Here."

The Pulse of Entertainment: Earnest Pugh and Kerry Douglas Reunite for ‘The Outpour Experience Live'Album

Eunice Moseley

earnest-pugh_outpourexperiencelive_credit_thebellereport.jpg

(June 8, 2020) - "When you do live you feel the audience worship experience," said Kerry Douglas, CEO of Blacksmoke Music Worldwide, a promotions and marketing firm currently working on the Earnest Pugh "The Outpour Experience Live" album. They are also promoting the "God Wants to Heal You" single, a Billboard Top Ten Hit. "We've been talking back and forth about new magic."

"I've done several studio albums," Earnest Pugh added. "It's my fifth live one."

The last time 5-octave Pugh and Douglas worked together was almost a decade ago when they gave us the hits "For My Good," "Every Promise," "Rain on Us," and "I Need Your Glory."

"It's going on eight years," Pugh said about the last time they worked together. "Eight is for new beginnings. That's what it feels like - new magic."

This is Earnest's 10th album. "The Outpour Experience Live" album has 14 selections produced by Keith Williams, Michael Bereal and Marque Walker.

Concerning the album's single "God Wants to Heal You" Kerry said, "God wants to heal...I had a feeling about it. I said this song, we got to be put it out. Not knowing it was needed."

"It's a game changer," Earnest said about the single. "It's not about your agenda...you go with the content that speaks. We gifted it on social media...Kerry said, ‘Something's special about this song.' It actually addresses the pain we feel as a nation."

Some of the other selections of "The Outpour Experience Live" album include "Your Glory," "Thank You So Much," "Grateful," "The Grace Dance," and "Awesome God."

A native of Memphis, Tennessee, Earnest Pugh is Pastor at Ebenezer AME Church in Washington, DC. Pugh is also a musician who has garnered four Stellar Awards. He has peaked at the top of Billboard Gospel Charts with "Rain on Us Live" peaking at #2, "I Need Your Glory" peaking at #1 and "Earnestly Yours" peaking at #1.

Pugh is in the midst of changing his focus from albums to singles, so that he can concentrate on getting a Doctorate in Theology so that he can teach. Pugh's management is working on placing his songs on television and film soundtracks, which has been successful thus far. One of those soundtrack contacts wanted a song he had to get Kerry's go-ahead on. In calling Kerry, this is how they hooked back up again - to create "new magic."

The Pulse of Entertainment: A Move to Los Angeles Pays off for Hip-Hop's Odillia with Debut Single via Lukevision

Odillia_LilKeed.jpg

(June 12, 2020) - "In 48 hours we had a whole project. It was a great experience," said Hip-Hop's Odillia about recording a remix of her debut single "End of the World" featuring rapper Lil' Keed setup by Lukevision Enterprises. "The song is doing great."

Odillia is a prodigy child whose mother sharpened her artistic skills with ballet lesson at the age of six. A Hip-Hop dance instructor noticed her inability to sit still and advised her mother to put her in his Hip-Hop classes, where she became a B-Girl. By the age of 16 she had left home to pursue her love of the arts as a dancer, singer and rapper. Her dance skills as a B-Girl garnered an appearance on Holland's "Got Talent." On the televised talent showcase Odillia's B-Girl dance troupe placed second. The notoriety from the show enabled them to travel around the world performing.

"I love people. Happy music is so powerful," said Odillia, who was born Frederique Odillia Henriette Hochstenbag in Maastricht, Netherlands.

Odillia describes her sound as Hip-Hop/Pop with House Music vibes. In 2019 Odillia showcased her vocal skills on BBC's "All Together Now" talent competition and also relocated to Los Angeles. Not long after settling in she signed with Lukevision Enterprises for representation, found a label and immediately went into the studio.

When I asked about her experience recording her debut single with Atlanta based rapper Lil' Keed she said, "...Our managers linked us together. We wanted a remix version. We're also working on my new song."

Now 24 years-old Odillia is well on her way to making her own foot-prints on the Hip-Hop culture and I look forward to seeing her accomplish her musical dreams.

"Long term, I want to take over the world with my music. I have a positive message in my music...it's about more than being an artist," Odillia pointed out about her motivation and dreams or the future. (Remix Video: "End of the World -

The Pulse of Entertainment: Underground Hits Production Introduces Gxlden Doll aka Gene$i$ to the Entertainment Industry

Eunice Moseley

gxldendoll_pink_resize.jpg

(June 16, 2020) - "I want to make the time worth it," said entertainer Gxlden Doll aka Gene$i$ about signing a management deal with Underground Hits Production. "I'm looking forward to progressing. He wasn't doing management because he was too busy, but he made time to work with me."

Underground Hits was also handling marketing for the careers of Motor Sports' Richard Petty and NASCAR's Bubba Wallace, and managing the careers of Hip-Hop's Y.F.R.S. and Eli. I call Gxlden Doll an entertainer because she seems to do it all - singing, songwriting, rapping and modeling. I'm sure she can probably act too.

"I went into the studio with one of their artist name Eli. I was going to work for him writing," said Gxlden Doll about how she hooked-up with Underground Hits. "He...was talking to someone looking for an artist. He ended up saying he wanted to work with me."

Gxlden Doll began singing at the age of nine. Shortly afterwards the Honor Roll student began songwriting. The Kansas City native recently received four Kansas City "People's Choice Award" nominations - "Best Female Vocalist," "Best Female Rapper," "Best Makeup Artist," and "Best Model." With the guidance of Underground Hits Production which is already making its mark in creating "celebrities," I see her future is bright.

"He already got me in the studio," she said excitedly. "He is about the music and the artist, not so much the money...so I want to make sure the time is worth it."

I have the feeling we are going to see big things coming from this 19 year-old "entertainer."

The Pulse of Entertainment: Grammy Winning Myron Butler to Release ‘My Tribute' Honoring Works of Andrae Crouch

myronbutler.jpeg

(June 19, 2020) - "It's necessary to honor legends of Gospel music you grew up listening to," said multi-Grammy Award winning Myron Butler about the June 26, 2020 release of his new album "My Tribute" - in honor of "The Father of Modern Gospel" Andrae Crouch. "I grew up listening to ...Duke Ellington, Louie Armstrong...so many icons."

Butler, a singer, songwriter and producer, felt the industry needed to release more than one song per album in honor of the legends, so he enlisted 14 artists and released a whole album in honor of the works of Crouch who made major mark on the Gospel industry. Some of the featured artists consist of Dorinda Clark-Cole, Fred Hammond, Kim Burrell, Anthony Hamilton, Kenny Lattimore and Kirk Franklin.

"This was a monumental task," Myron admitted. "Andrae Crouch songs are monumental and I had to make sure it was right. I'm not the only one who feels the desire to celebrate him."

The "My Tribute" title track is a Crouch song, "My Tribute (To God Be the Glory)." The album offers 11 songs - 11 Andrae Crouch hits. Myron credits Andrae for taking Gospel out of the church into the streets. Andrae's group The Disciples made its mark on the Gospel industry as well. Crouch's songs crossed genres adding Gospel to Pop and Rock charts and opening the door to the creation of Contemporary Gospel. Myron talked about how the public is in need of these honors.

"Everyone responded to the ‘Clark Sisters' movie," he said. "So much so they had to re-air it. I'm doing this tribute record to make sure the music of our forefathers is common place. Until each generation is aware. It's who we are."

Myron, also a Stellar Award winner, produced the entire "My Tribute" album. Crouch's music even crossed out of the recording industry into films appearing on the soundtracks of The Lion King and The Color Purple. He garnered seven Grammy Awards and worked with such iconic entertainers as Michael Jackson and Madonna.

"Andrae had a significant impact on me as a song writer," Myron pointed out. "I was a songwriter and choir director the first time I heard ‘Jesus is Lord'. I had never heard Gospel like that...so inspiring."

Myron Butler was a prodigy child who by the age of 17 wrote his first song for the Dallas Fort Worth Mass Choir, directed by Kirk Franklin, titled "Lift Him Up." The DFW Mass Choir was later named "God's Property" with Myron as its Choral Director. Franklin went on to form Franklin and the Family Choir. Butler is also a pianist/organist who serves as Minister of Music at Bishop TD Jakes' The Potter's House. He has worked as backup singer and vocal director for Kirk Franklin, Marvin Sapp, Smokie Norfolk, Donald Lawrence and Yolanda Adams.

Some of "My Tribute" tracks include "All Things Well;" "The Blood Will Never Lose its Power" featuring Michael Lampkin; "Holy Spirit" featuring Samoht; "On It Is Jesus" featuring Blanche McAllister-Dykes, and "Living This Kind of Life" featuring Peter Collins.

The Pulse of Entertainment: Tamika Patton Wants You to ‘Stand on His Promises' on New Single

Eunice Moseley

tamikapatton2.jpg

(June 23, 2020) - "The single is ‘Stand on His Promises," the album is to be released this fall," said R&B/Gospel vocalist Tamika Patton during an interview. "It's a churchy, gritty, victorious anthem...that tells you God is in control. He promised to be our source, our healer...we win all the way around."

Patton, also an actress who has starred as Mahalia Jackson for five years in the "Hallelujah Mahalia" musical, is noted for having a Jazzy vocal sound to her Gospel delivery. The single "Stand on His Promises" features Korey Mickie. Not new to Gospel, the Philadelphia native released her debut Gospel album in 1999 titled "Born Again" with a lead single titled "Mustard Seed Faith."

However, Tamika Patton started in the "music" industry in 1989 as an R&B singer releasing her debut R&B album titled "#1" on Orpheus Records. The albums' first single "Your Precious Love" featured Eric Gable and peaked at #20 on Billboard's "Hot Black Singles Chart" and it stayed there for 14 weeks. The follow-up titled track featuring Earl Bynum peaked at #75 on Billboard's "Hot Black Singles Chart" and stayed there for six weeks. Years later after the 1999 release of her debut Gospel album "Born Again" Patton toured with James Fortune & FIYA and was voted "Best Inspirational Singer in America" in 2011 by Radio One and Praise 103.9FM. It was also in 2011 that she released a new single titled "More Than Faithful" written and produced by James Fortune. She went on to perform on the "Bobby Jones Show" and on the "Ellen DeGeneres Show."

"We were working on it (a single) for a year. I woke up one morning and God said ‘here, this song," Tamika said recalling why she decided to record the cover song "Stand by His Promises." "I kept working on it, but God said ‘now'. I was amazed myself. This song made me want to clap my hands...just encouraging. I'm excited to see what God is going to do. I know God has breathed on it because the spiritual connection was different."

Tamika informed me that "Stand on His Promises" was written 20 years ago by a fellow Philadelphia native Eric B. Franks, who recently passed away. She shares as co-writer for the single, which is produced and arranged by Ramon Shelton.

The Pulse of Entertainment: Candi Staton Says ‘Just Breathe' on New Single via The Orchard

Candi-Staton-.jpg
(June 26, 2020) - "Started...really writing a couple years ago," said Grammy nominated Candi Staton about her new music and recently released single titled "Just Breathe" featuring Rapper Yo-Yo. "It's like what's going on in the world today? One mountain after the other...people getting killed, police officers not being charged...fake news coming from the powers-to-be."

The single was released on the Beracah/MRI/TheOrchard imprint. Currently 80 years-old, but still very youthful, Candi has been providing us with inspiring music for over 60 years. Her first release via a group called The Jewel Gospel Trio was in 1953 - she was a teenager touring with Sam Cooke and Mahalia Jackson, and I wasn't even born yet! In the 60's she garnered two Grammy Award nominations for her R&B singles "Stand by Your Man" and "In the Ghetto." In the 70's she became a "disco-queen" with her "Nights on Broadway" and "Young Hearts Run Free" singles. In 1971 her single "He Called Me Baby" was covered by Rock band One EskimO for their debut album "Kandi" and the single peaked at #1 on Billboard's "Triple A" Chart. Her 1972 single "Best Thing You Ever Had" was sampled by Christina Aguilera and a remix of the single was used for a Twitter Superbowl commercial. In the 80s she released two songs that went multi-platinum, "You Got the Love" and "Hallelujah Anyway," meaning each single sold over two million records. The single "You Got the Love" was covered by Joss Stone in 2010. Since then she has recorded not only Gospel, R&B and Disco, but Blues and Pop. Still going strong Candi Staton's music has amassed over 100 million audio streams.

"You watch the news and get a knot in your stomach," Candi pointed out about why she released the "Just Breathe" single. "I've been in the house for two months...didn't know what's going on. I said I need to take a break."

Candi said watching the news of one after the other being killed by police and all saying "I can't breath" because of the police choke-hold and she thought about that song "Just Breathe" because she felt it fit with the current times.

"We started writing and we got three songs," she continued. "‘Where We Go From Here,' we are working on that now... It's a great time for prayer. God got us. He has us in the palm of his hand."

Candi is about to cross-over to Hip-Hop by enlisting Yo-Yo as a featured artist on the "Just Breathe" single. Yo-Yo came into the Hip-Hop spotlight in the 90s garnering placement on Billboard's "Hot Rap Songs" Chart. Her debut album "Make Room for the Motherlode" peaked at #5 on Billboard's "R&B/Hip-Hop Albums" Chart in 1991. That same year her single "You Can't Play with my Yo-Yo," off of her the debut which featured Ice Cube, reached #1. That success led to major collaborations with Brandy, Queen Latifah, Snoop Dogg and MCLyte. In 1993 she hit the top of the charts again with "Bonnie & Clyde/IBWin' with my Crewin'." In 1995 she earned another Grammy nomination for "Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group" for her contribution to the Quincy Jones track "Stomp," which also featured Chaka Khan, Coolio and Shaquille O'Neal. She also ventured into acting having starred in Boyz in the Hood, Sister Act: Back in the Habit, "Martin" and "New York Undercover."

"People are afraid to come out," Staton stressed emotionally. "I began to talk to the Lord. I began to remember...God is on my side. I said God protect them (protestors)."

Candi Staton wants her fans and the protestors to "Just Breathe" and to know that God got you.

(June 30, 2020)- "My desire is to put a smile on their faces," said saxophonist Kim Waters about the release of his new album titled "Shakedown" (Shanachie). He explained it's all about having a good time shaking it down to the ground. "With everything going on, everybody is confused...I hope it's a great inspiration."

"Shakedown" is Kim's 24th album. The Smooth Jazz sax player is also a composer, pianist and music producer who is ranked among the top five instrumentalists in Jazz. A Maryland native currently residing in Georgia, Waters is known for his dissent Contemporary Jazz sax playing. He is known for taking Hip-Hop music, R&B, Reggae and Pop genres and twisting them into his style of Contemporary Jazz. On "Shakedown" he reinvents Ella Mai's hit "Boo'd Up."

"Every one that we do, we have a little spirituality because we give of ourselves," Kim stated about his album's creative process.

The 10-track "Shakedown" project, was created while he was at his grand piano and not in the studio, a first time, and is dedicated to his wife Dana and his twins Kimberly and Kayla. Kim Waters was a prodigy child playing the violin at the age of eight and then at age 13 he changed to the sax because he said he was teased about playing the violin by other boys. He has a long history with his current label Shanachie Entertainment since the release of "Love's Melody" in 1998. This is his 13th album at the Shanachie imprint.

"I want to tell them to stay strong, and let this (album) give them a little break," Kim concluded.
